How hard is it to be honest?

I have been sitting in this chair for 13 years. I work with a lot of good people and also do not work with the ones who are not so good. I get calls weekly from owner operators looking to put a truck on. I have a soft spot for guys who go out and work hard but get screwed over! You will never know some of the stories we hear out here. The biggest thing I hear is that guys never see a load confirmation. If you pull for us, you can request to see any load confirmation, ask a rate and ask any question you have. We have found that just being honest is the best policy! We do not gouge our drivers. We do not take money off of the top and then still charge a percentage on what is left and we certainly do not overcharge for trailer rental! I honestly do not know how some of these companies can live with what they do? At the end of the day, I have to go home and see myself in the mirror! Right now, I am happy with what I see and very happy with what we have built here! We are not high tech! We don't use a traffic management system and the business is run the same way it was when I walked in the door and for 20 years prior! It's not broken so I guess we won't try to fix it!

Happy Memorial day to you all and a heart felt thank you to all veterans out there and their families who have sacrificed so we can live in this wonderful country and be able to post our opinions on this forum!

You are right Keith. I hauled for a "broker" out of Minnesota arrived 3 hrs before the elevator closed. The elevator manager asked if the broker said we are full I said no he said it will be after 9 am the next day so I called and the broker said he would make it right. Never got a nickel

wanted a load from the same broker so I could add on the demerge I am owed. I would have used a factoring company

That is pretty low on the broker's part! Most times, they will tell you they will go to bat for you but then don't! Stand your ground and keep after them to get you paid! You hauled the load and you deserve to be paid! Especially if information was withheld about not being able to unload the same day.

That's half the job of a broker is to lie!

I can state other issues, but here is the largest, that I deal with.

The people I worked for before who I am with now. Gave me a before and after rate con. Then the weekly settlement looked like this;

gross. x,xxx.xx

cut -10%

washout + xx.xx

detention + xxx.xx

total on bottom line (straight forward and fair)

Now I get the first rate con. Then a monthly settlement like this;

5-10. Deposit x,xxx.xx

5-17. Deposit x,xxx.xx

5-24. Deposit x,xxx.xx

Now, I have no idea of any other credit or debits that are going on. Just based on that information, and nothing else. It takes extra time for me to track everything, plus I have no idea of what is true.

What are your thoughts?

Our settlements are as follows.

Gross revenue xxxx

8 or 10 percent depending on if you have your own fuel or use our fuel card, -xxx

any miscellaneous charges to the fuel card, xxx

plus any detention that is paid, 100% goes to the truck, xxx

plus fuel surcharge, 100% paid to the truck, xxx

net pay xxxx

There is no reason to have all these ambiguous lines on a settlement. The thing that I absolutely HATE is when someone gets a load, skims money off of the top of the load and then has the audacity to charge a high dispatch rate! Or this one, 12% of the load to rent a trailer! If you gross 20k per month, that means you pay 2400 dollars in trailer RENT! Not rent to own, RENT! We have nice equipment! Well maintained and we are 350/week rent for our 2015 trailers and 400 per week for our 2023 and 2024 trailers. It makes me mad to listen to all the garbage that is out there! We treat our O/O and drivers well! It is like a family, not a business and it shows. We stay busy. We get done what we say we will and hardly a complaint! When you are shady, you will find that you have trouble getting your loads done in a timely manner, especially when your drivers are not making money and at the end of the week, they pick up a check and can not figure out how anyone got to the figure on the check!

I was asked not long ago what our TMS system is? My response was "what is a TMS system"? When it was explained to me, I replied "our TMS system is a red box with 2 sides to it sitting on the desk in front of me. The left side is for loads that need to be completed and the right side is for loads that have been completed." That is the way things were done before I got here 13 years ago and it worked for the 20 years prior and still works today! If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I am old! I have seen a lot of crap in my day! The over complication of simple tasks seems to be the norm and 99% of the time it is to screw someone out of their money! All I can tell you is that when I go home at night and see myself in the mirror, I am proud of what I see and what we have built!

I hope all of you can find someone who will treat you well and not just look out for themselves! Best of luck to you all!
